The “Fleming” Ancestors |
| Note on Codes: Every person mentioned has a code which describes their relationship to me. This is very useful when names are re-used from generation to generation as happens so much in Scots tradition. The code uses combinations of 6 letters F=father, M=mother; S=sibling; D=descendant; H=husband; W=wife together with numerals to show order. So my father is F. His eldest sibling is S1 (in this case S2 is not used as he was second born). Where two possible codes are available the simpler one is used. In a more complex example, my second wife’s fifth sibling’s second child is W2S5D2. |
The earliest ancestor I have found is Alexander Fleming (FFFFFFF) (B~1734) a Wright in Kilmarnock, Scotland and who married Marion Wilson (FFFFFFM). Their third child was also named Alexander (FFFFFF) (B 14 Dec 1759), a shoemaker who married Mary Armour (FFFFFM) (B 4 Aug 1755) on 20 Aug 1781. Dates of death are not known for these ancestors. Alexander and Mary had one known child, William Fleming (FFFFF) (B 1783—Kilmarnock) also a shoemaker who married Grizel Tannahill (FFFFM) (B 1785) on 17 Nov 1806. This is the origin of the “Tannahill” name which exists in the family to this day. While family folk-lore states that Grizel Tannahill was related to the relatively famous Robert Tannahill of Paisley (his statue is in the town square), this relationship has never been proven. Again only one descendant of William and Grizel is known, namely William Fleming (FFFF) (B 1807 D 1837) who was a painter, and an artist. The story of William is quite a tragic one as described in the Kilmarnock Gazette. The painting to the right is supposed to be a self portrait of William, who married Martha Millar (FFFM)on 15 Feb 1833 and had one child whom they named William Tannahill Fleming (FFF) (B 11 Jun 1833, D 12 Jun 1900) a Commercial Traveller. Now, let’s move to Australia. |
