The derivation of the nameVariants— Steuart, Stuart, Steward. The word Stewart comes from the Old English “Stiward” or “Stigeweard” (sty-warden) as one who looked after the domestic animals. Not a promising beginning. However by the 11th Century it had become a title of honour and the Chief Steward of the King was known as someone to be reckoned with. The Royal Stewart Tartan is particularly attractive and used on everything from travel rugs to thermos flasks. More details about the origins of the Stewart name are found in The Surnames of Scotland by George Black The Stewarts of course appeared in Royalty and one of the famous was Charles Edward Stewart, “Bonnie Prince Charlie”, a Jacobite pretender to the British Throne who was defeated at Culloden Moor in **** and fled to the Isle of Skye.
